The Laboratory

Fire Resistance

The fire resistance laboratory is able to carry out vertical and horizontal tests on materials that go up to make buildings: floors, doors, ceilings, walls, glazing, beams and columns. The laboratory also features two small scale furnaces suitable for conducting indicative or development work. The present fire resistance laboratory at the Building Test Centre was commissioned in 1980 and has a state of the art furnace control system. The current laboratory was first granted accreditation in 1983 and now has full UKAS accreditation. The Building Test Centre's Fire Resistance Laboratory is unique as it has the only furnace in the country capable of conducting tests on partitions up to 5m in height and loaded partitions up to 4m in height.
