Reaction to Fire

Traditionally the reaction to fire laboratory has been part of the Building Test Centre’s fire laboratory. However, during 1999 and following considerable capital investment the reaction to fire laboratory was relocated to a separate building.

The main reason for creating a standalone facility was due to an expansion in the test apparatus requirements to meet the new European Test Standards. Reaction to Fire testing is a way to evaluate the contribution a material can have of fire growth and development, which is important in the early stages of a fire. The reaction to fire classification of building material is based off a series of tests to determine a materials propensity to ignite, spread a flame, rate of fire, combustibility, smoke production and production of flaming particles.

The Building Test Centre has heavily invested in European test methods and can offer the full range of tests to classify building products (excluding flooring products)

BS EN ISO 1182

BS EN ISO 1716

BS EN ISO 11925-2

BS EN 13823 (Excluding floorings)

Combustibility rating is rated A1, A2, B, C, D, E or F, A1 and A2 classes are considered non-combustible where B-F are combustible

Smoke growth rate is rated s1, s2 or s3 with s1 being the lowest and s3 (only tested for BS EN 13823 (Excluding floorings))

Flaming droplets is rated d0, d1 or d2 with d0 being there are no flaming droplets within the first 5 minutes, d1 limited flaming and d2 for anything else. (only tested for BS EN 13823 (Excluding floorings)
